Hurricane Bill

"There's a hurricane a-comin' a hurricane a-comin"

as Sophia would say from the golden girls!

Though it's really nothing to joke about. 6 years ago Nova Scotia was hit with a Catagory 2 hurricane named Hurricane Juan. Juan did a lot of damage in the Metro/Halifax area.

They have since retired the name Juan name, no storm will ever bare that name again.

Hurricane Juan made landfall between Shad Bay and Prospect on September 29th, 2003. It's eastern eyewall reeked havok on the Halifax Reigon with driving rains and winds up to 157km/h. There were eight fatalities from Hurricane Juan, over 100 million trees were lost, and left 800 to 900 thousand residents without power at some point during the storm. Some Nova Scotia residents were left without power until October 12th 2003. Two weeks after the storm.

So for the last couple days we've been hearing about Hurricane Bill. Many Nova Scotians still have many anxieties from the effects of Juan, and are preparing for Bill today. My family, though not in the Halifax area, are still in the path and will be taking many precautions throughout the day to prepare for Bill's arrival.

Not sure what to do to prepare?

  • Prepare Food, Water, and Medications to last at least 72 hours.
  • Tie Down or Bring in anything from outdoors that may become a projectile. Lawn furniture, toys, tools and equipment. In hurricane force winds, even the smallest of things can be deadly.
  • If you depend on pumped well water, and do not have a generator. Start filling up buckets and containers of water. Not only will you need it for drinking, but washing, cooking and flushing the toilet as well.
  • Get Cash. In the event of a power outage, debit machines will not work. You better off to have a supply of cash on hand.
  • Fill your propane tank - you may be using this for cooking for a few days
  • Fill your gas tank - again, no power, no gas
  • If you have a Deep Freezer, move any food from your small fridge freezer to it. It will stay colder longer in the event of a power outage.
  • Remember, keep fridges and freezers closed at all times in a power outage
  • Have flashlights ready with lots of extra batteries. Use candles sparingly and NEVER leave them unattended.
Most of all - STAY SAFE
