Preschool - Here We Come!

10:58 AM Posted by A Busy Mommy

I am so flipping excited! My boy finally gets to start preschool. I've wanted to put him in for so very long, but everywhere I called was either full or way to pricy. The School that I found for him is 2 days a week, Wednesdays and Fridays from 8:45 to 12:15. It's not very far from our house and inexpensive! It's only $14.50 per day and that includes his snack and lunch!

He's pretty excited too! He's wanted to go to "Little School" for some time now, and I finally was able to get him in!

We went to the school this morning and got him all signed up. He checked out his classroom and was thrilled with all the new toys he's going to get to play with. It's a very structured school which excited me a lot too. (he so needs structure in his life, I suck at that)

He goes in at 8:45 and I drop him off into the big classroom. There they start their day with a bible story on a felt board, and free play for 30 min. Then they go to the washrooms and wash up for their snack. After snack they get to go outdoors and play for 40 min, weather permitting, then they come in and have a reading time, and play some more. Then it's lunch time and time to go home!

If you can't tell, I'm absolutely thrilled! Now, his daddy? not so much... he's not quite ready to let others be responsible for him...but it has to happen! Next year Ben will start Primary (Kindergarten) and we all need to be prepared.

So, wish us luck and we'll be sure to post some "First Day Of School" Pictures tomorrow!

Lunenburg County

On Friday, My Mom, sis from Toronto, Ben and I went to spend the day in Lunenburg. At first, Ben was a little queesy in the car, he actually said he wanted to go home and have a nap (which is a sure sign that he needs to puke) but me, being the wonderful mom that I am ignored his warnings and told him to nap in the car.

We made it to Lunenburg, mess free and he did have a little snooze in the car. He woke up feeling just fine and full of energy. We had a great lunch (which was on mom) and a wonderful little stroll around the town.

Now, one thing I would like to say is If you plan to go to Lunenburg, wear sneakers...the place was built on a hill and at 6 months pregnant, it was not an easy walk.

I took lots of wonderful photos of our trip to Lunenburg. Ben and Aunti KiKi did amazing poses and had a ball jumping around and acting like fools. I came home to upload them Friday night, and this is what I found...

Note to self...do not let your children play with your camera without first protecting the photos on it. Yep...they're all gone...every single one. Thankfully Mom and Aunti Kiki had their cameras as well, so the memories will still be available to me...they're just not mine. And Yes...I Cried. A Lot.

Child Labor or Teaching Him Young?

Today was quite the eventful day...full of housework! Now usually I don't get too much help in this area but for some reason I had a little helper today!

After doing the dishes (that should have been done last night) I decided that today was the day to clean the fridge...Tomorrow is grocery day. After I had emptied everything from the fridge, Ben came to ask what I was doing and said that he wanted to help. So, I said "Have at it!!!"

I gave him a cloth and a bucket and into the fridge he went!

Shortly after completing the fridge, which he did a wonderful job on I might add, it was time to start supper. First I had to take a swagbucks break, and did a few searches for a good pie crust recipe. Which I did find, and altered a little too my liking. We were making Chicken Pot Pie for supper, which is a new one for me...It Turned Out YUMMY!!! So, Once again, I put the little guy to work. He was thrilled to be making supper for us! This was his very first pie crust, and it turned out very flaky!!! Though before we started he made sur to inquire about the ingredients. His exact words were; "Mom, does this recipe need flour, cause if it does I HAVE to wear my apron so I don't get messy." He made me laugh so hard I had tears in my eyes!

After the pie crust was ready and sitting in the fridge, we sent out to prepare the filling for our Chicken Pot Pie! He prepared the veggies while I cooked the chicken.

Today was an awesome day...we accomplished a lot, and he rarely had to be gotten after. It's funny how kids tend to be so much better behaved when they're included in our daily routines.

Now, here is the recipe for the Chicken Pot Pie we made for supper today.
Preheat oven to 450 F.

Pie Crust

1 C Crisco Shortening
2 C Flour
1 tsp Salt
1 Egg Beaten
1 tbsp Vinegar
5 tbsp Water.

Blend together the Shortening, Flour and Salt until it is crumbly. Create a well in the center of the mixture and add your egg, vinegar and water. Mix together until a dough starts to form. Knead briefly and refrigerate until ready to use. (Will keep for a week in the fridge)

Pie Filling

2 Lg Chicken Breast Cubed
1 Lg Onion Chopped/diced or sliced (how ever you like it)
2 Tbsp Italian Salad Dressing
1 C Frozen or Fresh Peas
1 C Carrots Sliced
1C Corn Nibblets
Potatoes Cubed.
2 Cans Campbell's Cream of (what ever you want) Soup (we used mushroom)

In a nonstick pan put your chicken breast, onion and salad dressing. Cook until chicken in done, then add your corn and peas. In a separate pot, boil your carrots and potatoes until tender, then add them to your chicken mixture. Once you have everything in the pan, add your cream of whatever soup. Mix well.

In a large baking dish, I used a 9" X 9", Spray with non stick spray. Put your filling mixture in the bottom of the pan. Roll out your Pie Crust to the shape of your pan and place it over top. Put a few slits in the crust for steam to escape. Bake for about 30 minutes or until pie crust is a nice golden brown color.

Enjoy!!!

I LOVE PICNIK PRO!!!

4:23 AM Posted by A Busy Mommy

In my adventure to make the best of what I have, I've decided to get a pro account on picnik, so that I may edit my photos so they're nice and bright and happy looking.

So here is the result of my first edit:

Before

After

I still have a lot of learning to do, searching for great programs and really getting to know the features of the camera that I have. But hey, I'm trying. I do plan to have this one printed so I can truly see what it looks like, not just on a screen.

My Soccer Man

This is my boy after his first day of soccer. He went for the full 6 weeks, and at the end received a medal and a trophy. Yesterday him and I collided and we broke his trophy ( upset me way more than him) but Daddy says he can fix it.

Mrs. Hamster

We now have a much happier little boy, With a pet he can handle (once trained) and no more sick fish. (They had worms and fungus...ewewewew) We'll probably get some more fish once I've had a chance to clean and cycle the fish tank. This time from a different pet store than the first. Skeeters Pet World, much more knowledgeable about the animals they carry, and willing to tell you how to keep them healthy and safe.

Fish Problems....

7:05 AM Posted by A Busy Mommy

On Ben's fourth birthday, I really wanted to get him a pet. Not something big or too much work so we went with fish. Now I know, fish are a lot of work, but it's work I don't mind doing. Weekly water changing (not really that hard).

So since we got his fishies we've had nothing but problems. We only have a 10 gallon tank, which means small fish, and only a few...fish need lots of room.

So, the first 7 fish we had didn't make it. Most died within the first few days, a few really tiny ones got sucked up the filter...oops!

So, we went last week and bought two new fish. I cleaned and cycled the tank, everything that went into it was cleaned...new filter, everything I could do. We had bought 2 Ryukin Calico Goldfish. Last night, DH and I were checking them out. Couldn't figure out why they were swimming on their heads and had red spots with worm like things sticking out of them. I found a neat forum online with a chat room and told them my problem. They were very helpful and helped me to figure out just what was wrong with my fish. The Forum is called Aquaria Central.
Definitely a great place to start researching BEFORE you buy your fish and equipment.

OK, so this is what we've figured is wrong with the fish...I'll let you know later what the pet store has to say.

First of all they seem to have a bladder disorder, caused from too much protein in their diet and over feeding. Treatment: Stop feeding them for a day or two, then put peeled thawed frozen peas into their tank to help them clean out their systems.

The Worm - Like things seem to be Anchor Worm and that requires medicine. I've called the pet store and they are willing to give me the meds for free. We're just not sure if we're going to keep these little guys. If my tank is too small, that would mean Daily water changing... and it is so NOT a possibility to go out and buy a 40 Gallon tank for two fish.

Ryukin Goldfish can grow up to 10 inches in their first year. Meaning this tank is way too small for them. I may hunt down freecycle and see if I can't find another. But a tank that size is doubtful.
